Pat 'Pops' Newland has been serving authentic British fish and chips in London since 1945, and from this he has recreated a restaurant serving one of Britain's best-loved dishes in a friendly setting, surrounded by authentic 1940s/50s memorabilia lovingly curated by Pops himself. Our menu includes sustainably-caught mouth-watering fresh fish cooked in crunchy batter, served with golden chips and classic mushy peas, prepared on the premises by our onsite fishmonger. You can also try the seafood platter, pies, chicken, or traditional east end classics like jellied eels, followed by traditional, indulgent English desserts such as sticky toffee pudding and apple pie. Pop’s career in the fish and chip business started in 1952 when, aged 11, he got a job on Roman Road cutting up copies of The Daily Mirror to wrap fish and chips in. With decades of experience behind him, ‘Pop’ founded Poppie’s. The shops are filled with retro memorabilia from Pop’s childhood, The uniforms channel a 1950s vibe, and the music is tailored to each shop. Tired of the loosely French inspired humdrum of restaurants popping up across the city of London? Do you like holidays? Do you like cold drinks and warm service? If you've answered yes to one or more of these then perhaps Tollington's can refresh both your pallet and your mind. The idea came from a mirror in an antiques market and a love for a more informal approach to dining, the result is a chippy in North London with old church pews bolted to the walls to be leaned on and eaten from. The focus is on fish but the menu transcends fish, mammals and vegetables, leaving no stone unturned in the never ending quest for flavour. Split between two rooms, the front the engine, the kitchen and bar shared by customers as they perch on bar stools and enjoy dinner and a show. The back, bookable room is lower, lower lighting, lower seating, perhaps a slight calm compared to the front room, here works of art from friends of the restaurant adorn the walls and floors.Book now to reach Nirvana.

A truly great dining experience. Impeccable, friendly service, excellent fresh well prepared food. The fish was very fresh, and well prepared. This comes from a real fish connoisseur. The artichoke salad was perfection. And the tiramisu was the very best. Thank you, Santo Mare Team!

Excellent choice for a late morning treat with a great selection of champagnes and wines. The club sandwich was exceptional (including a gluten free option) and the service was superb. Definitely one to try when shopping in Selfridges.

We dined at Poppies in Camden on the final evening of our recent visit to London, and it was the perfect way to end our trip. This place truly sets the bar for excellent food and service. The fish and chips were simply exceptional—crispy, golden batter on the outside and perfectly cooked, flaky fish on the inside. Every bite was bursting with flavor, and the chips were just as they should be: thick-cut, fluffy, and delicious. Their signature tartar sauce was a delightful accompaniment, completing what can only be described as the quintessential British fish and chips experience. The service was outstanding. From the moment we walked in, the staff made us feel welcome, ensuring that our meal was flawless. They were attentive without being intrusive and exuded warmth and professionalism that made the dining experience all the more enjoyable. The atmosphere at Poppies is charming and nostalgic, with a vintage vibe that adds to its appeal. It’s clear that this is a place with a passion for quality food and a love for tradition. Overall, Poppies Camden deserves nothing less than an excellent rating. Whether you're a local or just visiting London, this is a must-visit spot for authentic fish and chips. We left with full stomachs and happy hearts, and we will absolutely return on our next trip to London!
