Water Lane is a restaurant based within a working market garden in the High Weald of Kent. Guided by the seasons, our menu reflects its sense of place in the English countryside where we grow our own vegetables and use local suppliers. Our ever changing menu is simple but prepared with imagination and care by our Head Chef Jed Wrobel and his team.The Good Food Guide 2023 describes us as 'A contender for one of the most charming eateries in Kent, it's pretty much impossible to resist the lure of this rural restaurant tucked away in a delightful walled garden...' We are open Friday to Sunday 10am - 4.30pm, serving breakfast 10am to 11.30am and lunch 12pm - 3pm. We serve dinner on Friday and Saturday evenings between 6pm - 8.30pm. Our restaurant is currently located in the Carnation House glasshouse. We welcome well behaved dogs on a leash in our garden.

In addition to the food, we offer a selection of fine wines, quirky cocktails, and have a collection of over 25 craft gins available.World War I poet Siegfried Sassoon lived in Matfield and is the inspiration behind our name. Sassoon was awarded the Military Cross for "conspicuous gallantry" and later won acclaim for his writing. Nestling in the heart of the beautiful Kentish Weald-the Garden of England, the Star and Eagle Hotel is located in the village of Goudhurst. Standing over 400ft above sea level, there are outstanding views of the surrounding orchards and hop gardens for which the area is renowned. Dating back to the 14th century, the Star and Eagle has played a significant role in the local history, and was once reputed to have been an ancient monastery. Relics of the vaulted stonework of the period are still visible in some parts of the building. During the 18th century the Inn became the headquarters of the "Hawkhurst Gang", who robbed and terrorised the surrounding district, and planned smuggling raids. Today, behind its attractive timbered gables, the Star and Eagle offers all the comfort and facilities of a 20th century hotel with the charm and atmosphere of a bygone era. Open throughout the year, the Star and Eagle is less than three miles off the main A21 road with easy access.

Great experience eating at Food for Friends. Lovely staff and the food was great. I enjoyed my started and dessert the most. The pineapple tart Tatin and the sticky toffee pudding is a must try!

Extremely welcoming; excellent food and service; expensive but you get what you pay for I don’t like background music most restaurants that I’ve been in have it - indeed once InCornwall we were the only diners at lunch and asked for the music to be turned off. The staff said they were unable to do this, but they could turn it down a bit, I suspect that a poll of diners would overwhelmingly ask for a quiet restaurant. I have not seen such a poll.

What a fantastic find. The moment we arrived we were warmly greeted by the bar and waiting staff. Very attentive throughout. A lovely cosy atmosphere as you would want from an English pub, Food choices were varied and suited all tastes and the standard of cuisine was very good. We live in France so for us this was a treat and we will be back
