Mawn is a noodle house with “no rules,” and the first restaurant for Chef Phila Lorn and his wife Rachel, who bring with them close to 20 years of experience in Philly’s restaurant scene. Phila, pronounced “Pee La,” broken English for Philadelphia, is a first-generation Cambodian-American chef. The first in his family to be born here, his parents and siblings came to Philadelphia as refugees in 1985 after surviving the war in Cambodia.Mawn, which means “chicken” in Khmer, the Cambodian language, represents more than one thing. To Phila, chicken was at every meal growing up, and to his parents, chicken represented peacetime. During the war and genocide of the Cambodian people, there was mostly only what was found in nature to eat, including rice and salt. If there was chicken, it meant no war. At the end of that dark time, recipes were lost, and culture was wiped out, but through survival, a new authenticity was born.

We were on 1526 Sansom St. for 14 years and then moved to 1300 South St. We create gourmet Afghan food that you can find in Afghanistan or here at our Philadelphia location. We have mouthwatering flavors starting from our bread to our kabobs. Our bread's recipe and technique have been passed down from the founder's great-great-grandfather, who owned an array of bakeries and managed many restaurants in Kabul. Passed through generations to our chef, who brought delicious meals to 15th and Sansom of Philadelphia. Then from 15th and Sansom to 1300 South St. We have delectable food that you fall in love with and will bring comfort to you, from our meat lovers to our vegans.     Second time back for brunch, and Mabu keeps growing on me. Lovely intimate space, nice background music, wonderful menu, warm service, reasonable prices - what more could you ask for? I had the French omelet last time and the Croque Madame this time, both of which were terrific. The accompanying salad was also simple and tasty - a pleasant surprise when so many side salads at restaurants don't complement the food or add anything. The only downside is that I live in the suburbs - if i were closer, I would be eating there every week!

    Everything was wonderful! We sat on the first floor,Veronica was our waitress and she is amazing! Staff was very attentive,offered suggestions, and food was delicious. Great selection of drinks, food was well prepared and flavorful and arrived promptly. Jerson checked on us and the tables around us several times to make sure we were all good. Deserts were delicious as well. Definitely worth dining here and we can't wait to go back..

    Absolutely delicious food packed with flavor. Every dish we ordered was perfectly done. The papaya salad was delicious and a must try - who says that about a SALAD. The marinated beef skewer melted in your mouth. The noodles were of course a stand out! I'd probably skip the crab stir fry. It was good, but not great like everything else I tried. And make sure to save a bite of room for the rice pudding. It s was all phenomenal
