Shanghai 1814 is an exceptional destination restaurant in an iconic listed building in the heart of Southampton. You won’t have experienced anything quite like it. This is where East meets West in a cacophony of flavour, style, colour and vibrancy. Shanghai 1814 is so-called as the owner’s ancestors opened their first restaurant in Shanghai in 1814 – the time of the Qing Dynasty, China’s final imperial dynasty. This combination of traditional European architecture with exuberant Chinese interior design is dynamic and exciting. Welcome to Shanghai 1814 and enjoy the ultimate dining experience. Wow-factor interiors are decadent and glamorous, draped in dazzling chandeliers and adorned with cherry blossom. The menus feature contemporary Chinese dishes that are fresh and flavoursome, created by a Chef who previously worked at Michelin-starred Hakkasan in London’s Mayfair.

    A comfortable booth for four people right near the main door was fine for us. A quiet lunchtime was probably a prelude to a crazy Valentines evening. It would be no surprise as the food was plentiful and the service first class and I'm sure everyone would be more than satisfied. We'll be back.

    Attended the evening of Thursday 13 February 2025. Nice surroundings. Taken straight to our table. Plenty of waiters. Unfortunately our waiter, while adequate, wasn’t as attentive as we noticed others were. We waited approximately 25 minutes between the starter and the main which we thought was a little excessive. An optional side was not delivered with the main and had to be re-asked for. Food was excellent, not budget but worth the overall cost. Service charge included in the bill and was not questioned, because despite the above minor negative points, was happy with the overall experience and will eat there again.

    Booked a table for mine and my boyfriend's birthday as we share the same day. Both extremely happy with the night. Food was fast and hot, polite service and very attentive but not too much. Atmosphere was just right and the inside is beautifully decorated. Received a complementary cheese cake for our birthday which was such a lovely touch. Highly recommended. 5* will be returning. Thank you!!!
