A very nice little bistro in a bustling part of town. The Fitzroy ambiance was excellent and the staff were very nice. The menu is "fancy french" and fairly pricey so I chose it for a special night. We had snails for entree which were very good, and cooked perfectly. They came in a delicious garlic butter which had crusted and caramelised beautifully so we scraped it up with crusty bread. Mains were not so good. I had coq au vin which was watery and more like a soup than a casserole/stew. It had a few small bits of chicken, 3 potatoes, carrots in a pale broth. I'm no expert but I was expecting a rich sauce and a hearty meal. It was disappointing. We had a side of petit pois/peas which were pretty good.
My friend had a steak, medium rare with chips. It was over $40 so I would have expected something better but it was plain steak and chips. The steak knife provided was little more than a butter knife, and not up to the task. I asked for a new/better one but they brought another just the same. My friend (a teenager) couldn't manage and started to eat with her hands. I had a go and was able to cut it up for her but it was pretty tough. She ate it all though and said it was okay.
All in all, a bit under par for a special night out. Okay, but can't say I'd recommend it.
