We’re a casual and cozy restaurant serving up Asian small plates—from fun improvisations on that theme to faithful renditions of classic dishes that we love. We love the name “bonito” because it’s both the Spanish word for “beautiful” and the name of one of the most important fish in Japanese cuisine. Thus, it’s the perfect name for a restaurant that seeks to explore the shared traits in the cuisines of Vallarta and Vietnam, delving into our mutual love for funk, citrusy brightness, and carefully calibrated spice.

This location is in Zona Romántica right next to the beautiful 200-year-old Banyan Tree. Comfortable air-conditioned dining room and a gorgeous outdoor garden provide the perfect setting for all occasions.

Our most popular items are ramen, pho, pork belly bao, soft-shell crab bao, coconut shrimp rolls, summer rolls, green papaya salad, potstickers, lobster dumplings, pork belly dumplings, teriyaki salmon, Korean BBQ beef, and green curry.

First of all the food is superb … 5+. However we arrived for our 8pm New Year’s reservation only to be told the kitchen was closing at 8:45 and the restaurant was closing at 9. While I appreciate that they wanted to close early to give staff a holiday night off, there was no advance warning on OpenTable nor on their website. It made our evening somewhat hectic as we rushed to get our orders in which was not relaxing. Also I had asked on OpenTable to be seated in the garden and we were instead seated inside which was ok but not as nice. So the evening was a mixed bag for us.

Surprisingly superb food! Bonito is as good if not better than the best Asian restaurants in LA at 1/2 the price. Wonderful outdoor space.

Amazing mix of Asian cuisines in a great location. Staff was very friendly and the atmosphere was very serene. Highly recommend and check out their new Sake lounge.

Had an amazing dinner with friends. The dishes were fantastic. The owner, France, came by to greet us. She’s so sweet and welcoming! Highly recommend this place!!

Food was good as usual, but the quality of service had declined since my last visit. There was no pause between the appetizers arriving and the main course following. Some on the table were waiting for their appetizers, others had taken a bite or two, and the main dishes started arriving with no room on the table. When asked the waiter why the rush when half the restaurant was empty, the waiter shrugged and said that's how they deliver food to the table. The noise level rose when a concert started in Cassitta and Garden, rendering everyone unable to have any conversation.

This is a lovely surprise in el centro. Beautiful designed and crafted Asian dishes. The standouts for me are the gyoza, tuna tostada and Korean short ribs. Everything is impressive.

Loved everything about our experience here. Food was interesting and delicious, plus there was an abundance of healthy options, which we always want. Service was great. The owner came around to see how everyone was enjoying. The outdoor patio is so charming. Loved it.
