Welcome to Ukiah Japanese Smokehouse, where Japanese Soul Food meets American BBQ by James Beard Nominated Chef Michael Lewis. “Japanese Smokehouse” is defined as merging Japanese ingredients and flavors with American BBQ techniques, and everything in between.

Menu highlights include light and refreshing dishes such as Wagyu Tataki with house kimchee, yuzu kosho and savory soy or Tuna Takaki with fire roasted peppers + ponzu, to bolder flavors such as Smoked Pastrami Short Rib with toasted rye, fire roasted kimchi + yuzu pickles. We are currently open 7 days a week.

Please note, our dining room consists of booths, regular tables and high-tops. We will try our best to accommodate you at your prefer location, but sometimes it is not possible due to party size. Our outdoor tables can be requested but not guaranteed when booking on open table.

    This year, we all deserve double the fun, so Asheville Restaurant Week returns for TWO weeks, January 21-27 & February 17-23! Chef Michael Lewis & Ian O’Shaughnessy have created a special tasting menu for $38.00pp. Salmon Sashimi, wasabi soy broth + scallions Veggie Gyoza, truffle ponzu Crispy Rock Shrimp chili butter + gorgonzola Iceberg Wedge, sesame dressing, nashi pear + nori Smoked Carolina Pork Shoulder + kyoto-carolina BBQ Seasonal Veggies Chefs Dessert Please note, all the following dishes will be served family style, to the center of the table, perfectly portioned for your group to share. Dishes may not come out in the following order. Please note, the full table must order the menu and no substitutions may be made.

    The food was amazing and we had a great time in general but there was an unfortunate misunderstanding/disappointment. We had an 8:30 reservation specifically for their Valentine's Weekend tasting menu. We were informed shortly after being seated that the kitchen closes at 9, which didn't allow enough time to do the tasting menu like we had planned. Our server did offer an accelerated version of the tasting menu, but implied that this would be far from ideal. So we ordered ala carte from the main menu and everything was good but we did feel a little rushed and weren't offered a second round of drinks, probably because the bar was trying to close up. If their kitchen closes at 9, I don't think they should even offer an 8:30 reservation and they certainly shouldn't offer an 8:30 res specifically for their tasting menu when it isn't feasible for that time slot. Aside from that it was great and we plan to go back at an earlier hour so we can enjoy the full experience.

    Christopher was great. Even had an extra dessert brought out for Valentine's Day Sunday service.We love Ukiah and can't get enough.

    Ukiah’s atmosphere is dark, cozy, and lively and the staff is more than welcoming! Our server Jonathan was delightful and upbeat. Our tasting menu was phenomenal! An amazing blend of steak, fish, rice, and veggies and well worth the cost. Each dish was carefully curated and presented beautifully. The Old Fashion or “Oldi” was delicious and smokey but the Purple Rain is by far one of our all time favorite drinks! We’ve never had a bad experience! Just go, trust me!

    Food selection and flavors were excellent and Christopher is one of the best servers I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with. His knowledge, timing, manners and attention to detail was superb!

    Fantastic different food. Worth the price. Tempura mushrooms, and coconut cake, not to be missed. Service off a bit from impeccable but still good. Parking can be a problem. All is worth it for the food, drinks and experience.

    I really love Ukiah. I’m going back next week to celebrate my birthday. They had a fabulous test drink with local gin and my favorites- the beech mushroom and ribs! Do yourself a favor and check it out!!!
