Okay, I have read many reviews on OpenTable about the Cypress Beach House and though I had some concerns we went ahead and booked it for December 25, Christmas night 2024. I will give you the lowdown.
First of all, you should know that the restaurant is outdoors, on the roof deck of the Hilton-affiliated Inn at the Pier. It can be chilly if not downright cold in the winter and there are no windbreaks (yet). They provided us with a gas heater, which worked pretty well for the parts of our bodies above the table but our legs were cold. I was told they had blankets but we just used our sweatshirts and wore coats. If it actually rains, they serve in the breakfast area in the ground-floor lobby.
Executive summary: The food is excellent. The waiter was superb. The kitchen was extremely slow. On warmer days the setting is spectacular, especially for sunsets.
We had breakfast our two mornings (lobby area) and met the restaurant manager both times. She joined earlier this year and has been making progress on all the problems you can read in the reviews. Regarding the slow kitchen, on the night we dined two of the cooks were out, one from illness and the other from a death in the family. So the cooking was done by the executive chef and the restaurant manager.
At dinner our waiter visited us frequently to apologize for the delay. He eventually comped (all three of) our drinks (and another table's desserts, I heard). He was terrific.
They were out of the main things we wanted to order (halibut and grilled artichoke) so I had the crudo (marinated raw snapper) instead and it was large for a starter and delicious. The grilled broccolini with an almond-balsamic sauce was fabulous. All the dishes satisfied.
The wine list is well-chosen and reasonable. The restaurant will be moving away from its Italian component to feature California cuisine, which is good. They will be getting windbreaks and a roofed pergola in 2025
Come in the spring, at sunset. We will.
