Comfort food from Kerala, India's spice garden. Thattu is located in the beautiful Chicago neighborhood of Avondale. It was born of Chef Margaret Pak’s love for the southwest Indian coastal cuisine of Kerala. Our menu brings you traditions of Kerala along with playful interpretations from our culinary team. Rich with aromatic spices, coconut and curry leaves, the cuisine is a celebration of the bounty of the land and the sea.

    When you think of Indian food, you think of spice quantity and color. Without any of those it is white washed Indian food and that’s exactly what this was. Not to say the food was bad. Just unexpected bland. A notable mention is the beat ketchup that comes with the tater tots which my sister loved. Otherwise I would say if you’re coming to Chicago for the first time, this is a miss but if you live here, try it out.

    Wonderful staff and everything we ordered (which was a lot :-) was terrific. They are a tipless restaurant and incredibly reasonably priced for the quality of the food and caliber of the staff. I will definitely be back!

    We had a great first experience at Thattu! We had the Short Rib curry, Lunar New Year Special, Fried Chicken bites, and fish in banana leaves. Everything was delicious. The space is very industrial-looking in pictures, so I was expecting it to be loud and drafty, but the temperature was pleasant and acoustics were good. I love their ordering system - you send the order to the kitchen through a QR code and they bring it out. The servers are still very attentive and happy to answer questions, but you don't have to flag them down to order a second drink. Win/win! I didn't realize at first that they have a no tip/no service fee model, so I was a little confused at the end when there was no option to tip, but apparently they build service into the cost of menu items and just pay their servers well. Big fan of that! Everything was very well-executed. I will return soon with friends so we can try more dishes!

    A truly lovely first experience at Thattu. Excellent food and cocktails, nice house wine, and comfortable atmosphere. Service was attentive but not overwhelming. Will definitely be back again.

From their non-alcoholic drink selections that were refreshingly unique, to a diverse menu featuring vegetarian delights, succulent seafood, and well-crafted alcoholic beverages, every choice was a hit. The culinary versatility continued with their meat dishes; whether it was pork, beef, or chicken, each was prepared to perfection, showcasing the rich, authentic flavors of Kerala. It's rare to find a restaurant that excels across such a varied menu, but Thattu does it with style and substance. The entire experience was enhanced by the warm and welcoming atmosphere, making it clear why Thattu has earned its stellar reputation.
