Serving fresh, bold and innovative food that reflects the history of New Bedford and celebrates the New Bedford fishermen, their catch and their culture.

Our menu focuses on local fishermen’s catch of the day, old school seafood favorites and a sprinkling of modern seafood interpretations. Menu ranges from raw bar, to warm and cold lobster rolls, baked cod, bacon wrapped scallops, bouillabaisse and grilled NY Strip.

Large bar and spectacular views of the artful New Bedford Fishing Fleet. Large covered and heated deck overlooking the fishing boats and harbor. Centrally located beside the Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Ferries. Large parking lot.

And, of course, the hospitality is second to none. Service is what built the business.

A must-visit if you're in New Bedford. Fantastic food, with views of the boats tied up right outside the window. The salmon was excellent, as was the clam chowder.

Absolutely amazing. They always have the best service and food. It’s fresh and wonderful flavor. They keep some amazing regular dishes on the menu and change it up once in a while. Sitting at the bar indoors outdoors or in the dining room indoors or outside you will get constant service and quality. Thank you Black Whale for always being my go too!!

Great as always. Our hostess, Cynthia, is always so welcoming and kind. Our server, Kaylee, was terrific. The sushi was excellent quality, as always, and the octopus was wonderful. The ambience was lovely and our martinis were perfect. This has consistently been our go-to place for good reason. Sending big thanks to all of the staff there.

When you find yourself in New Bedford, MA, treat yourself to a meal at The Black Whale. Extremely convenient location, plenty of parking and a beautiful building make a great first impression. We were warmly greeted by a Manager and a Server, and even though we were 40 minutes early, they sat us straight away. The menu is extensive, however, not overwhelming, and SO many great choices. Our Server, Meredith was very warm and welcoming, starting us off with water and their delectable salmon dip with tasty “crackers”. To aid the decision making process, my wife started with a Painkiller, and I a Maine Lunch. We finally decided on the tuna poke bowl for my wife and the pan-seared scallops for me. Oh, and I had to try the New England Clam Chowder, the best I have had in quite some time. Then Meredith informed me the chowder is an Officials and People’s choice award winner from this year’s festival. Please do try it! Honestly one of the most delightful, delicious and enjoyable meals I’ve had in the area. The Black Whale is definitely a must do when you find yourself in the New Bedford area, or you are just passing through.

We ordered the Portuguese style littlenecks casino for $17 and received 4 very small little neck shells (no clam) with mostly flavored bread crumbs and a very very all amount of tiny bits of minced clams not a littleneck which is what clams casino should be. This was outrageously priced for what we received. People should be aware of this before ordering. The bread crumb flavor was good but no clam taste whatsoever! We are frequent patrons here and had never ordered this from the menu and to say we were dissatisfied is an understatement.

I’ve never had an issue here except for this afternoon I requested a sm stable near the bar area which is where I have sat for the past 5 or so yrs. I reserved a table and requested the same sm table near the bar area and was told upon arrival there wasn’t one available and that all of the sm tables had just been seated. My question is if the reservation was read properly why wouldn’t one of the sm tables be available. I did not recognize the host and hostess so they must be new which might explain the inconvenience. Not a big deal just an FYI

We had a wonderful NYE dinner. The food was delicious and my steak was cooked to perfection. The covered “patio” was beautiful and inviting, and our server, Mick, was attentive without being overbearing. I’ll make The Black Whale a regular stop when visiting New Bedford.
