Opened August 2017, The Butternut Tree is just a stone’s throw from the beautiful Alberta Legislature Grounds close to Edmonton’s majestic river valley. Chef Downey’s first restaurant pays homage to the places he’s lived, worked and explored, while showcasing seasonal ingredients from Canada’s diverse landscape.

A thoughtfully designed open kitchen allows guests to be part of the action. There are no walls, enabling discovery of Chef Downey’s style, both as a chef and a leader in the kitchen.

The Butternut Tree focuses on replacing global sources of sweet, sour, bitter, and salty with unique ingredients from our home and native land. From budding foodies to seasoned supporters of local provisions and purveyors, this is the place where guests can experience the unexpected.

The food as always, was excellent! Usually the tasting menu leaves you stuffed full, but this time we both left hungry after a 7 course tasting menu, which is why I’m giving 4 stars.

We thoroughly enjoyed our first visit to the Butternut Tree and we will definitely be back. The service was phenomenal and so was the food. The plating was gorgeous and overall it was a great evening.

Cosy restaurant, overlooking the Legislative building. The food is always delicious. And I just love to see the presentation too! The idea of supporting local Canadian ingredients is wonderful. Great place for celebration or just need an escape from stress.

Absolutely incredible, food was unbelievable, service was some of the best I’ve ever had and very fairly priced menu. Will definitely be back and highly recommend.
